Originality

Throughout Henry James's novel The Portrait of a Lady he emphasizes in numerous ways how crucial originality is to the well-developed mind. Indeed, in the book all things cliched or pedestrian are ridiculed, while all things fresh and innovative are praised in the highest terms. I so long to possess this type of mind. I long to rise above all that has been done before, to think new thoughts, and explore entirely uncharted territory. I realize that I can never be truly, ultimately, original, as I am limited to all that God has already created. But that is not really a limit: if I am so challenged, I can discover what has never been seen. Surely God has created us to ever strive higher, to be dissatisfied with what has already been unearthed, and forever dig deeper. He is endless, and we cannot feel Him out completely--but certainly we can eternally travel forward!

Selflessness

One of my vilest tendencies is to become so wrapped up in myself--my thoughts, my feelings, my world--that I disregard everything else... that which is most important. I want to come to the point that "I" is the least-used word in my vocabulary, replaced by "you." I ache for understanding, for proper perspective, for wisdom, but I will not taste any of these until Self is uprooted and replanted in Him, where it is but one leaf on an endlessly flourishing Tree.
